Power Steering Pump Failure Warning Signs
A hydraulic power steering pump can fail, can provide several warning signs prior to complete failure, and if identified early enough, could save a car owner from a very expensive repair bill.
Whining or Groaning Noise
One of the most common signs of a failing hydraulic power steering pump is a high pitched whine or low groan sound. This can occur when you turn your wheel and in most cases gets worse the more you turn your wheel to full lock. For example when pulling into a car park and making sharp turns.
Stiff or Heavy Steering
However, there are times when stiff steering occurs and then disappears. The stiffness of the steering will tend to increase as the failure of the power steering pump worsens.
Fluid Leak Under the Car
Power steering fluid is a thin, red or clear liquid so if you notice any driveway spills, pay particular attention to whether they are near the front of the car. Any leaks from the power steering pump will result in loss of pressure and cause the system to fail completely and provide no power to the steering at all.
Slow Steering Response
If there is a delay between turning the wheel and the car beginning to turn then the pump is not putting out enough consistent pressure to power the system. This is more noticeable when driving at speed and having to change lanes quickly or correcting your course after a bend.
Foamy or Discoloured Fluid
Pull the cap off the reservoir and inspect the power steering fluid. If the fluid looks as if it has a lot of air in it; has come into contact with moisture; is producing foam; is milky in appearance; or has deteriorated to a dark brown colour then it will cause serious damage to the inside of the pump. A failed pump that has been suffering from contaminated power steering fluid symptoms prior to failure will offer no power assisted steering at all.
Any of these symptoms could be a sign that your steering system is failing and may require repair before it leaves you stranded with no power steering.
