A Look Inside the Ear Canal
The outer ear and ear canal are examined using a small handheld light. Obviously, large amounts of wax, or redness and inflammation, will mean that these hearing tests cannot be performed.
Questions About Your Hearing History
You will be asked about your hearing history, such as when you first noticed the change, is it worse in one ear, do you have any tinnitus or dizziness.

A Middle Ear Pressure Check
This checks for the presence of fluid behind the eardrum, or indeed for a perforated eardrum. Note that this test is conducted gently and painlessly.
The First Pure-Tone Screening
The screening pure tone audiometry test. This is the test that most people will associate with a hearing test. In this test you are asked to listen to tones of different frequency and loudness, via headphones, and indicate when you can just hear them. The results of this test will outline which frequency sounds the loudest to you, i.e. the best, and which sound the quietest.
All of this information will have been gathered before any treatment or hearing aid recommendations are made.
