Renovating a bedroom can be a complex and time consuming job and getting the order of work wrong can be a costly error. The critical aspect is that each trade can complete their work in the correct order, without having to undo the work of another.
Strip the Room First
Remove all items from the bedroom such as furniture, carpet, curtain rods, etc. This will allow our team to see any hidden problems with walls, floors and ceilings, and also protect your personal property from dust and accidental damage.
Sort Structural and Plastering Work Next
Work such as changing walls, installing lintels and carrying out repairs to ceilings must be completed prior to plastering. The plastering work can then be allowed time to fully dry, which can take anywhere up to 2-4 weeks. Subsequent work such as painting must not be carried out until the plasterwork is fully hardened and will not ‘flake’ or show signs of dampness.
First-Fix Electrics and Plumbing Before Walls Close Up
As mentioned above, if you are moving plug sockets, adding lighting circuits or running any pipework, this must be done before the walls are closed up. The cables can be run through the open walls in a neat and cost effective manner. Again, please note that internal work may require building regulations approval and in particular, electrical work is frequently designated as such.
Prepare the Floor Before Decorating
Levelling any uneven floors prior to finishing them will ensure that your finished floor covers are not damaged by uneven boards and also allows for sufficient time for the subfloor to dry before laying your floor coverings. In most instances your floor coverings would be laid after finishing the decorating.
Decorate Before Fitting Furniture
The order of work for painting and decorating in the bedroom should be to complete the full decoration of the room before starting to fit out the room with furniture and finishing touches. It is not easy to cut in around a fitted wardrobe. For Bedroom Renovations, see https://www.thekitchenrefurbishmentcompany.co.uk/bedroom-renovations/.
Fit Furniture and Finishing Touches Last
Wardrobes, beds and all light fittings are placed in the room by their supplier once all other trades have completed their work. Then the furniture can be protected from dust and scuffs while the finishing work is completed. Your electrician will also be able to fix light fittings to the ceiling once it has been decorated.
Follow the sequence outlined above and each stage of your bedroom renovation will be protected to enable the next stage of the work.
