It may come as something of a surprise to find that the humble garage is starting to change. Once it was the realm of the Dad and the Car. The family motor would happily spend it’s evenings snuggled up in its brick, breeze block or even Oak Garages home safe from frost, wind and rain or the blazing sun, All it had to do was come out when it was needed and make space for the various bits of gardening machine and tools that seemed to make their way into the garage to join it.

However it seems that the garage is having something of a makeover and it’s use as a place for the car is being replaced with some more imaginative uses. A growing number of households now say that despite the fact they have a car they keep it outside on the drive or the roadside. The garage is being used for other purposes! But what?

For the most part it seems that we can’t throw anything away and the garage has to store the old bits of furniture and cabinets that we “might need someday”. However there are also lots of other more creative uses. Many small businesses have been set up and run from the garage or the place has been turned into a giant model railway or race track (some of which makes it onto Youtube) for diecast cars. For others it’s a craft room, a zen zone or a gym to work out in rather than have expensive gym membership.
