CCTV for Warehouse and Yard Security

There is some planning required to cover warehouses and loading yards but it is not difficult to create an effective CCTV system for these types of premises.

Cover Every Entry Point First

One of the main areas to cover are all the entrance points i.e. Gates, Roller doors and pedestrian access points. Ideally the cameras should be angled to clearly view faces and vehicle number plates.

Deal With Racking Blind Spots

Packing tall shelving into long aisles means wide angle lenses don’t cover enough of the space. Typically end of aisle cameras or even mid row mounted small pitch cameras are used to cover the stocking gaps high shelves create.

Choose Cameras Built for the Conditions

For outdoor yards, the cameras will need to have a good weatherproofing rating as well as having sufficient range of infrared lights to cover all corners of the yard at night. Also, many industrial sites can suffer from dust and vibration, so cameras need to be rated for this type of usage.

Use PTZ Cameras on Large Open Floor Areas

A PTZ camera is ideal for very large warehouse interiors and automatically scans the scene, locking onto movement in the scene. The camera can then zoom in on the incident to record high quality images.

Capture Number Plates in the Yard

For movement of vehicles around the yard use a dedicated ANPR camera or high quality camera to capture number plates at entry/exit points. Angle and lighting are critical for this type of application and need to be set up correctly.

Store Footage Accessibly

The ability to recover and export footage will also be important to enable swift release to insurers and Police. Also, the system must be able to be operated responsibly in terms of data storage in line with the relevant guidance from the ICO in terms of retention periods. A good coverage of a warehouse and yard can be set up by thinking through the individual areas first and then choosing the appropriate camera for each.
