PAT testing stands for portable appliance testing. Portable appliance testing is the name for a method by which electrical appliances are regularly checked for electrical safety. In general the testing involves checking the suitability of an appliance at a specific point in time. It may be done before the equipment is shipped to the buyer or before it is installed in a workplace. In either case, the purpose of the examination is to ensure that the equipment bought or installed is suitable for the intended use.

The main benefit of portable appliance testing is to reduce the risk of electrical shocks and fire, which can be very dangerous. For this reason, most appliances are subject to PAT testing right from the manufacturing phase. However, there are instances when an appliance is purchased and installed without undergoing any PAT testing. Such an appliance is not considered fit for purposes of commercial production. Even for domestic use, a complete check of all components and fuses is required before use. Find out more about the benefits of a Fire Risk Assessment Gloucester at a site like Keloscape

Generally, all domestic appliances and other electrical equipment is required to undergo a thorough examination by a qualified PAT engineer before being deemed fit for sale or installation. Every such piece of equipment is examined according to the kind of application that it is intended for. The examination starts with a thorough visual check of all components, fuses and fittings. After this initial examination, the engineer carries out a series of tests, based on which he/she determines the overall condition of the electrical equipment.
