Certain types of holiday become more appealing with age. Not the ‘ticking off a list’ type, where you feel like a naughty schoolboy if you haven’t visited at least three museums and a couple of art galleries before lunch. Not the ‘activity holiday’ type where you have to follow a guide who wears a whistle round his neck. No, the holiday type where you can do nothing. A holiday type where there’s enough to do but not so much that you have to worry about constant scheduling.
Llandudno is one of these places. There’s the promenade. Long, flat, beautiful, and with the sea doing what the sea does best – lapping, rippling, gazing out to Ireland (on a clear day, apparently). Long enough to feel like it’s worth doing, short enough that you can turn back if you change your mind. And no one will tell you that you’re doing it wrong. Whether you’re 25 or 75, the town’s too laid-back to do that. For the Best Hotel in Llandudno, contact https://stgeorgeswales.co.uk
Even better for those with mountain ambitions is the Great Orme. Which, if you take the cable car, isn’t even a mountain. It’s a hill. A big, green, verdant hill. The type of hill that makes you feel like a coward if you don’t walk to the top.
Llandudno is a tourist resort like any other, only nicer. Which is to say, the pier is preserved, the promenade is neat, and the independent shops are a treasure. And there’s not a fast-food restaurant or a tacky souvenir shop in sight. Although it might be worth pointing out to visitors who come by car that the town is at its best for those who walk. So just enjoy it.
