A microscope is a device used to examine small objects using a combination of illumination and magnification. It uses light coming from an illuminating source at the tip of a tube or slide called the lens, to illuminate the sample so that you can see it with your naked eye. Most people are familiar with microscopes used in laboratories and museums. However, there are some microscopes that are utilised by amateurs and professionals alike.

There are two major types of microscopes that people use today; the light microscope and the electron microscope. The electron microscope is much more commonly used by amateurs and has replaced the gas-phase model of the microscope. The gas-phase microscope was used to demonstrate the value of electron microscopic images to the scientist and layman alike. This type of microscope produces images of living matter using electrons instead of light to illuminate the sample. The second major type of microscope used today is the optical microscope. These use lenses to provide the image because it provides a better view of the sample due to its greater magnification and because it does not need to use any external light. These microscopes are most often used to study the structure and functions of cells, bacteria, and other organisms. Because of their superior resolution, high magnification, and ability to focus light to an appropriate focus, they are vastly useful for research scientists, medical doctors, microscopy technicians, and educators.
