Birch trees are deciduous in nature and although you won’t often see their wood being offered in a Timber Merchants Southampton as the wood is not great for construction, they are incredible trees and they have become a popular choice over the last few years for people looking to plant trees in their gardens. Timbo Timber Merchants in Southampton will sell a vast array of wood and you are sure to find the right wood for your project and they can advise you on the best wood for you to use.

It is thought that there are over 60 different species of birch and they are found in almost all temperate climate countries. They like their soil to be moist and to be in direct sunlight which is what makes them a popular tree for planting in many areas of the UK. They don’t thrive as well in clay soils as their roots often become waterlogged and they don’t like shady areas of the garden.

A birch tree can grow to around 12 metres or 40 feet over their 40-50 year lifespan. They are very distinctive trees in that their bark peels off in strips leaving a distinctive mark on the branches and trunk. They can be found in white, grey, yellow, silver and black in colour. The bark on the trees can be smooth to touch when the trees are young and dark ridges appear on the bark as the tree ages.
